There is a crisis. Christian youth are rapidly leaving evangelical churches for the world. This well-recognized disaster has been the topic of significant discussion in recent years for both church leaders and modern new media. DIVIDED follows young Christian filmmaker Philip Leclerc on a revealing journey as he seeks answers to what has led his generation away from the church. Traveling across the country conducting research and interviewing church kids, youth ministry experts, evangelists, statisticians, social commentators, and pastors, Philip discovers the shockingly sinister roots of modern, age-segregated church programs, and the equally shocking evidence that the pattern in the Bible for training future generations is at odds with modern church practices. He also discovers a growing number of churches that are abandoning age-segregated Sunday school and youth ministry to embrace the discipleship model that God prescribes in His Word.

A Weed in the Church

Almost everyone involved in modern youth ministry agrees there is a crisis in the modern church. Young people are leaving biblical Christianity. Scott Brown suggests that this crisis has an identifiable cause. He argues that while Scripture commands youth discipleship, the premises of modern youth ministry are at odds with biblical teaching. A Weed in the Church unfolds the history, the nature, the effect, and the root problem of systematic, age-segregated youth ministry and presents hopeful solutions built on Scripture’s sure foundation.

Reunited Bible Study Challenge

Many men propagate ideas and discuss methods for reaching the next generation for Christ, but does the Word of God have a voice in this matter? Churches everywhere face a critical question, “How should our church reach the next generation with the gospel?” The Reunited Bible Study Challenge is a companion to the film Divided and the book A Weed in the Church. It is a Bible study which challenges you to examine the Bible and let it speak to how we disciple our youth. Instead of creating our own inventions or brainstorming how to save our youth, we must return to the Word of God and study what it says on the issue of youth ministry. The Word of God is sufficient and its teachings are applicable for the subject of youth ministry, providing both teaching about and the example of biblical youth ministry. Further, it promises rewards for obeying God’s pattern for discipling the generations.

In Matthew 4:4, Jesus, in His confrontation with the devil, said: “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God’” (Matt. 4:4).

What about you? Will you take the challenge — the Reunited Challenge? Will you return to the Word of God and trust that it is sufficient to instruct how to reach the next generation?

The Story Behind Divided

Background

The Background

Young filmmaker, Philip Leclerc, notices that the youth of his generation are abandoning the faith. He sets out on a journey to discover the truth about modern youth ministry, with this question in mind: “Is it an issue with the church, the kids, the parents?”

Journey

The Journey

Interviewing youth, youth ministry experts, and pastors and understanding the history of age-segregated youth ministry, Leclerc learns that modern youth ministry is not founded upon the Word of God but upon the ideas of men. As a result, youth ministries are noticing a widespread youth exodus as kids abandon the faith for the world.

Solution

The Solution

Conformity to the Scriptures and the blessing of God are the keys to rescuing youth. The Scripture does identify the way to reach the next generation with the gospel — biblical discipleship. Through his journey, Leclerc asks questions, tackles problems, and discovers that the Bible is sufficient for the area of youth ministry: both in the content as well as in the methodology.

The Vision of Divided

Families Mended

Malachi 4:5-6 says, “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And he will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”

We desire to see families mended such that the hearts of fathers are turned to their children and the hearts of children are turned to their fathers. The only way that this will happen is through a turning of the hearts of men toward the Word of God. Jesus prayed that His followers would be sanctified through God’s truth, which is the Word of God (John 17:17). We are not sanctified through anything else, and this calls us to return to the Reformation doctrine of sola Scriptura (Scripture alone). The reformer John Calvin once wrote, “If true religion is to beam upon us, our principle must be, that it is necessary to begin with heavenly teaching, and that it is impossible for any man to obtain even the minutest portion of right and sound doctrine without being a disciple of Scripture” (Inst. 1.6.2).

Churches Reformed

Scripture has much to say about ministry to youth. Therefore, church leaders must be very attentive to it and conform to it. Every elder, deacon, and church member seeking to understand how we are to reach our children with the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ must begin at the fountain of truth and glean from the Word of God alone.

We long to see churches reformed. This will cause a generation to be rescued from this world and grasped from the jaws of the lion (1 Pet. 5:8). Therefore, we cry out for churches to do their part, for fathers to disciple their children, for churches not to usurp the authority of the family, for families to be a part of the church in a biblical fashion and not forsake her, for children to honor their parents — ultimately, for both church and family to return to the Word of God in obedience and not add or subtract from it in all that it says.

This vision involves reformation of the church and family, and it cannot be accomplished without the mighty working of God. Pray for a reformation, and put in the effort to see it through. James 2:17 says, “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”
